On March 31, 2025, the errant records with a value of 2 in the "NHS" field were corrected to have a value of 7 (Other NHS). This dataset contains geospatial information regarding major roadways in North America. The data set covers the 48 contiguous United States plus the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:100,000. The data within the North American Roads layer is a compilation of data from Natural Resources Canada, USDOT’s Federal Highway Administration, and the Mexican Transportation Institute. The initiative for the North American Roads layer was planned and managed by the Strategic Planning Committee of the North American Transportation Statistics Interchange, an association of government officials from statistical and transportation agencies across North America. The objective was to create a comprehensive digital cartographic network of highways and major roads across Canada, the United States and Mexico suitable for national/regional planning and freight and passenger traffic routing and analysis. The network is a single-line representation of highways and major roads and simplifies complex interchanges and freeway segments represented by multiple lines. Separate network files were supplied by Transport Canada, the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and the Mexican Transportation Institute (IMT). Transport Canada was responsible for combining and connecting the separate networks into a single North American network. Geometry for the Canadian network was obtained from Natural Resources Canada’s National Road Network (NRN) 2014. As the NRN source file was a multi-line digital representation for controlled-access freeway segments, Transport Canada extracted a single line for each freeway segment running typically from west-to-east and south-to-north. The U.S. network was taken from the Freight Analysis Framework V4 with no major changes except for edge-matching at international borders. Mexican network is a planning network supplied by the Mexican Transportation Institute (IMT). Some revision to its topology was done to ensure the network was routable, including at international boundaries. Topology of the network was checked and corrected for any breaks, especially at all international borders, to permit routing. Data fields adjusted to assist in tabulating road information consistently across North America.
