Data Profile: Gross State Product (GSP)
Gross State Product (GSP)
   Overview
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) estimates the Gross State Product (GSP) for states and regions in current and real dollars. It is the state counterpart of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

GSP is the value of goods and services produced by the labor and property located in a state. The estimates of GSP for each state are derived as the sum of the GSP originating in all industries in the state. Conceptually, an industry's GSP is equal to its gross output (sales or receipts and other operating income, commodity taxes, and inventory change) minus its intermediate inputs (consumption of goods and services purchased from other U.S. industries and imported).

The estimates are prepared for 63 industries. For each industry, GSP is presented in three components: compensation of employees, indirect business tax and nontax liability, and property-type income.

GSP data are consistent with estimates of gross domestic product in BEA national economic accounts. The state estimates of GSP and its components for all industries are controlled to national totals of Gross Domestic Product Originating (GPO) by industry and its components for all indutries. If the initial sum of the state estimates differs from the national total for an industry, the difference between the national total and the sum of state total is allocated to states according to the state distribution of the initial estimates.
   Coverage
GSP estimate are available for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, BEA-defined regions, and the United States.
